This collection of shorter stories definitely should be read before book 2 - there are enough mentions of events in them in book 2 that I stopped reading and came back to pick up these first. They're all good short episodes, moving us deeper into an understanding of who Ethan is, and of the pressures, experiences, and flaws that motivate Jack.

Sometimes I wanted to smack Jack hard, for his repeated failure to be able to see through Ethan's eyes. But both men become more human, more fleshed out, and more deeply engaged with each other, as they deal with killers and coworkers and the demands of bosses, and pressures from their pasts. I kept going right through this series, very engaging despite my irritation with Jack. His flaws fit who he is, so it's all plausible.
