The Turning by Jennifer Armintrout

Wow did I love this book! The 5 stars say it all!

It has all the best parts of a paranormal book but it is definitely written with a mature audience in mind. All of the characters have good depth and are likable in unique ways. None of the charters are just good or bad like they are written in many poor YA fantasy books which makes them all so interesting. The Protagonist, Carrie, is flawed and relatable in the best way. The story is realistic about the paranormal world and the way characters would act given their past.

This book has a really good balance of character development, romance, smut and plot.

Carrie dealt with the whole “this can’t be happening" phase that is in almost every paranormal book in a realistic way for a doctor and it wasn't dragged out which was good. Carrie gradually came to terms with her change over the course of the book.

I love everything about the character Ziggy from his relationship with Nathan to the things I can't discuss without spoilers. I also love/hate Cyrus' character so much! You know it's a good book when
Spoiler you hate the bad guys like Cyrus and Delilah but also understand why they act the way they do and it makes you pity them.
Having such emotionally deep characters with realistic motivations is what makes this book so brilliant!

The 'blood tie' reminded me of the mating bond in ACOTAR but obviously this was a paranormal book instead of fantasy and it doesn't have a ridiculously complex plot.

This was a brilliant book to start out my reading challenge with. I will take a break then probably return to this series to read the next book but,
Spoiler if you are okay with not having a perfect HEA,
you could probably read this book as a stand alone.
