The Umbrella Academy: Apocalypse Suite #2 (The Umbrella Academy Vol. 1) by Gabriel Bá, Gerard Way
2.0
TL;DR: The show is better. Watch the show instead.
Well, I've read the source material for one of my favorite shows of 2020. And it sucked. The Apocalypse Suite is the prime example of "good idea, awful execution". Nothing made sense. This was just a bunch of random things happening in somewhat chronological order. The characters had no depth nor personality, and the family dynamics weren't fleshed out in the slightest, so you obviously don't give a damn about who is who, who does what, and why the hell Vanya wants to destroy the world. Like does she? Because it seems like she was just this really stupid and impressionable woman that got tricked into being the bad guy by the first person she ever saw. Like what??
Also side note, the only character of color is a servant with no lines ? lol
Honestly, this volume was just so bland and so badly written, I'm actually impressed Netflix would even pick this mess up to develop it into a show. And thank god they did, because I think the story is so much better explored in the show.
Maybe I'll stick around for the next 2 volumes, but this is very much not a series I would've continued if I hadn't seen the show.
