Boy Swallows Universe by Trent Dalton
An unpopular opinion but I couldn’t get into this book. Eli is a really likeable protagonist and the themes of family and drugs and growing up are classic and re-presented through the lens of Queensland suburbia, which is rare. But I just didn’t connect with the style or content. It reminded me a bit of “Bridge of Clay”, with a narrative about family under the chaotic back-and-forth style, but a bit better than that! There’s possibly also something in there about being tired of masculinity dominating Australian narratives, since there was such an “Australiana” vibe, or maybe I’m just lazy this week and seeking something more accessible!
