Louis Riel: A Comic-Strip Biography by Chester Brown
5.0
As part of my #Canada150 and #resist150 commemorations this summer (because it is possible to be proud of our country while also recognizing our flaws) I read Louis Riel: A Comic Strip Biography by Chester Brown. It was a challenging, sad read.
I learned the story of Louis Riel in school and likely because I'm French Canadian we were always taught that he was a leader, a martyr, and a great founder of our country, but never a man. Reading this graphic novel really humanized the man for me.
Despite the fact that we have never revoked the conviction of Louis Riel, I think most Canadians now see him as one of our greatest.
