I was so excited to finally see a book about women in a patriarchal and upper class society. I was really hoping it would be akin to the Great Gatsby with an outsider, looking in and being scathing and a critic of society in a slightly hypocritical way. However, I was pretty disappointed with how uncaring the main character was. She moulded to the society so quickly and didn’t seem to have anything against it really. Her character was also very one-dimensional and not very nuanced. I found myself wanting to put this book down, because I couldn’t get lost in the writing , I always felt like I was reading words on a page rather than being enveloped in a story. The essence of mystery was exciting, but never immersive enough that I wanted to read on. I also felt like the character didn’t really get anywhere at the end of the book, which I understand that there’s a sequel, but I feel like she should have had some large epiphany or transformation. She just sort of blended into society quite naturally. I give this book 2.5 stars.
