kathrynwithabook 's review for:
Wild Eyes
by Elsie Silver
Hi, before beginning, I will say this book has a character with selective mutism; I know nothing about that or what it's like, so this review is done assuming that the author did that well and I won't be talking much about that in this review.
I have enjoyed almost every Elsie Silver book I've ever read; my complaints almost always start and end with the length of her books, as I mostly want to read romances about 250 pages, but that never really factors into my review unless the book drags on.
Skylar was probably Elsie's most relatable character to me so far, despite being from LA. (Hi, I was raised in the South.) Skylar has a lot of anxiety, but she tries to pretend it doesn't exist in a way I also try because if I don't acknowledge it, it isn't there. She also feels a lot like an imposter in her own life, which is something I tend to feel as a person who did a complete 360 in personality throughout the last few years - although Skylar's reasons for feeling that way are different.
My biggest complaint about this book is that Skylar's nudes leaking turned into a 3rd act breakup, which just infuriated me beyond belief. As an avid hater of the 3rd Act Break, it felt like something that was just thrown in to give the author a reason to break them up or a cheap way to throw in some conflict - and this is not an Elsie specific issue, I almost always feel that way about this conflict type - at the end of the book.
I would have much preferred if the two of them worked through this conflict if it had to be there, but I don't really like the leaking of her nudes in general - it just feels like a violation and I don't like to read about that.
Otherwise, I really did enjoy this book. I think the nudes are just something you should go into this book with an awareness of, so take note that this happened if it's also something you don't like reading about.
