Have We Met? by Camille Baker

4.0

Have We Met? by Camille Baker was a coming-of-age story for the young adult who is dealing with life coming at her from multiple places.  Corinne has just moved back to Chicago and is processing the loss of her best friend to cancer (not a spoiler), when she discovers a new dating app on her phone.  The weird thing is she didn’t download it and it doesn’t seem to exist anywhere else.

That’s the extent of “magical realism” so if that’s not your genre, don’t run the other direction.  It probably shouldn’t have this genre label, it’s just this teeny bit of make believe.

The app tells Corinne that four missed connections from her past will reappear, and one is her soulmate.  She starts paying closer attention to the people in her life, while juggling her career, her friendships, and her grief.  I appreciated the LGBTQ+ representation and that it was simply woven into the characters’ experiences.

The story has touches of romance and dating, but it felt more accurate to call it contemporary fiction that feels borderline YA.  I love YA and thought this was a cute read, but if you need more grown-up situations or more mature processing of grief, feelings, and family situations then this might feel a bit youthful to you.

Book number 2 in the series, The Moment We Met, came out this year and I’m curious to see another character encounter the app.  Let me know if you’ve read it!
