It took me a while to become interested in Fat Charlie and develop any empathy for him. I found some of the other characters more interesting, particularly Rosie and her mother.
But then when we met Spider or realised what he was the story really took off. Or perhaps rather, we can’t figure out exactly what he is and enjoy trying to work it out.
How did Neil Gaiman come up with such a concept?
In an extra bit in the e-book he discusses that question of where writers get ideas from. Most of us do not know. Yet what he said resonated with me. I was reminded too how important it is sometimes just to do nothing – that opens the door to creativity.
