Treasure Island
by Robert Louis Stevenson
Treasure Island by Robert Louis Stevenson was my first dive into classic literature, and—what a journey. Let me just say, the old-English writing style was… an experience… Like, half the time I was squinting at the page wondering, what in the seven seas are they saying (pun intended)? If I’d had my Kindle on me, I probably would’ve been looking up every other word, but honestly? That would’ve made the read even more exhausting.
As for the story itself? Solid. It gave me major Pirates of the Caribbean vibes but, more importantly, reminded me of my all-time favorite animated movie, Treasure Planet. (Seriously, if you haven’t seen it, drop everything and fix that immediately!) Knowing Treasure Planet beforehand actually saved me because the main characters and plot points are almost identical, and I would’ve been lost at sea without that reference point. Jim Hawkins, Long John Silver, the whole ‘X marks the spot’ adventure—it was fun to read the OG version of it all.
That said, while I enjoyed this little genre switch-up, I’m not gonna lie: I’m ready to retreat back to my comfort zone of romances and fantasies where the language is easier to follow, and I don’t feel like I need a degree in linguistics to get through a chapter. But hey, it’s nice to know I’ve officially conquered my first classic!
