Rosemary and Rue by Seanan McGuire

This is the urban fantasy I have been looking for. October Day is a changeling. Part Fae and part human. Although her blood is thin, she has been knighted and become a Sort if PI for hire. When her Leif’s’s wife and daughter are kidnapped, she is sent to find them. During the investigation, Her liege’s twin turns her into a fish for 14 years. She loses everything: her license, her boyfriend, her daughter. When she comes back, she’s ashamed she failed and avoids her leige.
An old “friend” is murdered and binds Toby with a curse that she must find the killer or die herself.
Lots of twists and turns without being obvious. Interesting characters. Lots of danger and a heroine who often goes off half cocked and gets shot. Toby doesn’t trust herself and believes a lot of the hate sent her way. Her mother sounds like a crazy idiot and Toby carries that around.
I really liked this beginning and look forward to the next.
