Soundless
by Richelle Mead
Jesus Christ where to begin...
As I am currently reading Anna Karenina which is a monster of a book I decided to take Sunday off Anna and grab a quick read so I won't fall behind on my reading challenge. I decided to read Soundless as I got it last year during Black Friday and it's a short book (266 pages).
I honestly did not have any expectations from it and I have to say this is the first book by Richelle Mead I ever read (no, I did not read a single book from the Vampire Academy or Bloodlines series and I will never do).
There are a lot of issues I have with this and there are a lot of things that do not add up.
Firstly, how did you people end up there? I need to know if that village had always been there or if someone built in on the mountain so people can mine the metals.
Secondly, the town has scrolls on what sound is like, but you don't have scroll on the history of the village? Really?? If you had scrolls on the history of the village, you wouldn't be in this stupid, dictatorship like situation to begin with.
Thirdly, you cannot give me a logical explanation on why people are losing their senses and then give me a magical explanation how to gain them back. YOU CANNOT DO THAT!!
Fourthly, I get it. The pixius are important. You don't have to say that word in every sentence for THE NEXT 20 PAGES!!!
In addition to this, Richelle Mead please get off Lord Of The Rings. The scene with the pixius coming to aid the people resembles the movie scene from Return of the King when the eagles come to help. I swear, while reading that scene I kept seeing Pippin screaming "THE EAGLES ARE COMING".
The chosen one cliché is milked to the point where the cow dies several times. I honestly feel that Li Wei could have been the "chosen one" as he has a strong desire to help the people of the village. Fei's main problem is to not end up in the mines with her sister.
Now let's talk about the forbidden love cliche. Oh my God, I know we're childhood friends cliche, but now we are in different social groups cliche and society forbids our love cliche, but don't worry we'll go on this epic quest to save the town and the elders will bend the rules for us CLICHE. The cliche shop is out of cliches for other books because this book took them ALL.
It was kinda predictable that the people were being used by a higher authority and deceived beyond a point of naivety.
I found this story rushed, with a lot of plot holes. The ending felt like the author ran out of ideas and pushed an old Chinese myth to end the book faster. I don't mind certain cliches, but this book was just one cliche after the other. I did not go in this with high expectations, but honestly I did not expect this much of a hot mess
