booknerdjo 's review for:
Bournville
by Jonathan Coe
I've never read a Jonathan Coe book before, and I think I've probably been missing out!
This was a great read - a 'state-of-the-nation' novel charting 75 years of change in British society through one family - the Lambs - who live in Bournville, the Cadburys' model village in Birmingham.
The characters were so real, and the story is told through seven major events from VE Day all the way up to the Covid 19 pandemic 75 years later.
Spanning five generations, the novel explores changing attitudes to various social issues - race, sexuality, politics and more. It also focuses on the things that do not change. Oh, and there is quite a lot about chocolate!
