Someday by David Levithan

“By my calculations, if you live to be 80 years old, you end up being alive for 29,220 days. And you’re likely to live much longer than those 29,220 days.

So one day shouldn’t matter.”

This book covers days 6065-6359 for A. If that means nothing to you, then you’ve probably not read Every Day (I gave it 5/5). Go read that, as it is the first book in the series. The second book in the series is called Another Day (I gave it 3/5). I personally had no real real use for Another Day as it was essentially just Every Day but told from Rhiannon’s point of view instead of A’s and just didn’t add anything for me.

Here we find Rhiannon and A separated, but still clearly in love. She’s dating Alexander and is trying to find some sense of normality. A is simply trying to exist now that they understand the feelings of the bodies they take over.

This story isn’t as focussed on what A and Rhiannon are to each other, though that is clearly here. Instead this book focuses on the fact that A is not the only being who lives the way that A does.

X desperately wants a meeting with A. X isn’t nice the way that A is he'll gladly hurt people to get what he wants (he also clearly identifies as male).

Some of the major questions are answered, while others are not. I think for A, and for us, the biggest takeaway is that like us, these beings all have different experiences. Different rules for themselves. Some are better beings than others, some are pretty evil. Just because there are others like A doesn’t mean they have all reacted to their lives the way that A did.

As to where this book left us? Arguments could be made both for we need more of this story and please leave it there. I kind of lean toward leave it there. There are aspects of the ending that are happy. And aspects that will least at least haunt A somewhat. It’s a little darker book than the first two. But it also goes a lot deeper into the troubles these beings can cause to those whose bodies they take over. I like it as much as I liked the first book but for totally different reasons. Every day was about truly knowing someone for the first time. This book is more about learning that not everyone is like you, not even if they share the same overall experiences.
