This was my first Discworld book, and I was able to pick it up and read about established characters without any issue—their personalities are so evident that they don't need any introduction, just an opportunity to exist in a scene to jump off the page. It started a bit slow, but the pace picked up until I couldn't put the book down (particularly once the Silver Horde appeared). The satire of fantasy Orientalism was often funny, but occasionally slipped into uncomfortable territory; the jokes in the narration about dogs being food were especially weak considering the general cleverness of Pratchett's writing. However, this may have been more of a personal preference than anything. Still, I'm looking forward to reading more from Discworld!
