The Wicked Remain by Laura Pohl

  • Diverse cast of characters? Yes

3.5

i really wanted to like this book especially as i enjoyed the first book in the duology, but in my opinion it was pretty disappointing.
in general, i did still appreciate the representation and loved that it showed how important and beautiful friendship can be (even tho sometimes it was frustrating to read the characters keeping things from each other because they cared too much). i was also invested and wanted to know the resolution.
however, i was not a fan of the language (small thing but sometimes the author could have used more pronouns instead of repeating the names and at times the language sounded kinda stereotypical to me, especially but not exclusively in some romantic moments). also the book could definitely have been shorter as in the middle there was a long part where nothing relevant to the plot happened. further, some aspects of the plot were not logical to me and came out of nowhere or seemed to be forgotten by the author at some point. as of the resolution, it was kinda logical but i think there should have been more buildup.
the teachers being responsible for the curse was the most logical resolution i can imagine because if there had been some other creature or something, that would have come out of absolutely nowhere. however, i think that they seemed pretty uninvolved in the curse and the girls trying to end it until the last third of the second book or so.

overall, it felt like the author had certain ideas of what she wanted to include in the book and the ideas are good on their own but i didn’t always like how and that they were implemented because it didn‘t always fit and maybe she just wanted to include too much.
