Anita de Monte Laughs Last by Xochitl Gonzalez

4.0

Anita de Monte Laughs Lasts tells us the story of Anita and Raquel in two timelines (within 20 years of one another) each dealing with their identity as a Latina woman in the art world. I thought that magic realism inclusion was good but I wish it was a tiny bit less specific. Watching the insidious nature of their relationships, each with men trying to control them under the guise of love and freedom to create, played well off one another. It's a literary fiction so there isn't as much a clear cut ending but a satisfying ending that tells us where each of their stories is free to keep going. I loved the journey that Raquel takes to reclaim her identity and interests in the face of pressure and other opportunities that she could reach if she compromises.

I am not a huge lit fic person but I have loved both books by this author and I am excited to read whatever she puts out next!
