The Island of Dr. Moreau
by H.G. Wells
So, I feel slightly conflicted with this one...the second half of this book was much better for me than the first half. I found the set-up and the writing in the beginning of the story to be tedious and boring and often found myself wanting to skip ahead paragraphs to just get on with it. However, from the time that Dr. Moreau starts explaining the "scientific" experiments that he is conducting on the island, the book gets more interesting and the pace definitely picks up.
The characters were also not very developed, but I was already kind of expecting that so this did not shock or even really bother me. This book was more about the mystery than the characters, although, it would have been nice if there had been more of an in depth look at them...their motivations, their pasts, etc.
This is also a novel about morality and science. It's about testing the boundaries of scientific curiosity within the "limitations" of morality. It's about instinct versus reason, and the baser animal urges that hide behind the thin veil of humanity.
While not a great read, it was overall a satisfying one, that included an interesting concept that was also creepy and sinister.
Recommend "The Time Machine" instead, if you are just getting into HG Wells.
