Sunrise on the Reaping by Suzanne Collins

adventurous dark emotional informative reflective sad tense fast-paced

In this prequel with darkness at sunrise, the series’ focus changes from media spectacle to the struggle from class domination.    Here is an overtly Marxian young adult novel.  It is an agony of worker dispossession and ruling-class consumption.  The Capitol’s power rests on extraction and force.   The workers speak in language of resistance, mockery, poster imagery, blowing things up.   I felt while reading I was in some early  20th century angry corner of anti-capitalism tumult like Glasgow or West Virginia.
