Sharp Objects by Gillian Flynn

2.0

Even with the captivating writing that Gillian Flynn provides, the story did not hold up. There's nothing (or anyone) to like here and that's not just because of the characters' personalities. The story was a slow burn that never quite built into anything, with plots and clichés that tried to be more than they were. I really wanted to love this book, sticking by in the hopes the ending would unravel into something unexpected.

It didn't.

Sharp Objects felt as though I was reading a Lifetime movie. If you're a fan of those specials and don't mind a twisted, darker edge to what lays underneath, you might enjoy this book for what it offers. Honestly, it's one of the few I would pass over in recommendation and advise friends to wait and watch instead. Perhaps, if the script favors anything like Gone Girl's adaptation, it will be more interesting than the book itself.
