After reading the first book of this series “The Lady Rivers” you can clearly tell that this was written first and that one second. It does not seem coherent that in this book witchcraft is widely used and in ways that seem out of place, for example, when they summoned a storm by blowing to the wind, since in the first book witchcraft is frowned upon and something to do in secret. I don’t particularly like how they portrayed it in this one, the author goes as far as having the main character curse the king directly to him without barely any consequence, when in the first one women were killed for less.
It seems that the author filled the historical blanks with this witchcraft. Overall this book is a little bit underwhelming and it feels like the focus is only in warfare and the description of warfare and war plots.
