Phantasma by Kaylie Smith

medium-paced
  • Loveable characters? It's complicated

3.5

Honestly this fell flat for me. I didn't know this was inspired by Caraval and that made me compare the two (a lot), which made the experience less entertaining.

I didn't like the romance. You expect me to believe these people did not know each other and are fucking like bunnies after just two days?? Maybe that is just me?? Either way, I was not convinced that they were in love at the end. And don't get me started on how derogatory the Devils were to their relationship. Like this was just funny to me.

I also felt like the 'world' (which was just a mansion) was small. Like really small. I felt like there was an opportunity for so much more. The trials within Phantasma were very cool, action-packed and interesting, but it also felt too long.

I did really like Blackwell's character. He made me swoon but, at the same time, he made me cringe. I'm happy with his ending though.

On the other hand, I hate Ophelia. She was always dragging the other girls/women down and just felt like she was better than others but she also was complaining about not having any friends?! Pick your poison, girl.

I still have no idea what the exact stakes were for people to part-take in these bloody trials. Just one wish, which they don't even talk about for the most part, so why are there so many people participating in Phantasma?

Plottwist was predictable but it did end strong enough for this rating.
