Where the Sky Begins
by Rhys Bowen
This is the first Rhys Bowen book I’ve managed to stick with and finish. I really enjoyed her writing and descriptions of civilian life during the war. I loved Josie and her gumption to make the best of things as life kept handing her one tragedy after another. I was also pleasantly surprised that she took her wedding vows seriously, despite being unhappy and in an abusive marriage. To see her deal with the tension of her marriage was refreshing in today’s publishing world. However, the way other issues were handled and the messages they portrayed left me feeling very conflicted. I enjoyed the tension and buildup to the German spy mystery, but the resolution of that arc felt rushed and too simple. I also was highly disappointed to find one of my biggest pet peeves in writing— the author takes the majority of the book to tell a story over a specific short time period, then crams years of events into the last few chapters. It always feels rushed, disjointed, and sloppy to me, even when the writing is good.
There was a lot I really loved about this book, and I’m glad I read it. But these other anomalies kept the book from being a higher rating. Still recommend!
