The Woman in White
by Wilkie Collins
Published in 1860 this was the first of the great Victorian detective mysteries and it stands the test of time very well. Although it did take me a few pages to get into the story once you're in you're hooked. The story is filled with intrigue, mystery and tension with a hint of the supernatural for good measure (as is traditional in Victorian mysteries) and is told through the recollections of all those involved with the style and speech varying with each narrator. A tale of corruption and greed as well as of conspiracy and tragedy the reader is drawn in further and further as the story continues and before you know it you are feeling protective over the innocent and naive Laura Fairlie and feeling a particular dislike for both Sir Percival Glyde and Count Fosco. A very good read that you can really get involved in and that has clearly set the standard for many of the modern day detective and mystery thrillers, in books, film and television.
