Etiquette & Espionage
by Gail Carriger
3.5 Light fun, with lots of chuckle-out-loud moments. Sophronia is good character to serve as a guide for middle grade readers through the steampunk world of the Parasol Protectorate: a tomboyish Victorian miss who learns the value of both intelligencing skills and a proper wardrobe. But she hasn't quite got Alexia's style or wit, alas. She's surrounded by an interesting cast of secondary characters, including the younger incarnations of many of the key players in the adult PP books. Without the romantic tension of the PP books to keep a reader's attention, though, the lack of compelling plot becomes far more obvious here than in Carriger's previous books.
