Out of My Mind by Sharon M. Draper
3.0

So I listened to this as an audiobook and I think that’s affected my rating. If I didn’t have an actual human reading the story as I listened, I really doubt that I would have found Melody’s voice as realistic. In some ways she sounded like what an adult thinks a smart child would sound like as opposed to an actual child who is really smart for her age. That being said, I actually did find Melody’s character to be quite engaging and I think that in the hands of someone younger she would be a great character to help build empathy toward people with disabilities. I thought the plot was relatively solid, with the exception being that part near the end of the book where Penny gets hit by a car which didn’t seem to add just a whole lot except setting up Melody’s confrontation of the quiz team the next day.
