3.5 stars for a book where I’m probably not the target audience (YA urban fantasy) and I have some mixed feelings. I heard so much about this series after the latest book, Oathbound, was released. It started strong and I really liked Bree, the main character as well as the university setting. The magic system was very difficult for me to follow. I don’t have much foundation in King Arthur stories, so I was really reading this without much other context. I would have loved a glossary with the different rankings and definitions that could have carried me through. It took me a really long time to read this one as it’s over 500 pages and I never really hit the point where the pages where flowing as I was always slightly confused. Although I really liked the main character, it was hard for me to connect with all of the secondary characters, making some of the climatic moments a little less emotionally charged for me. I did really enjoy the history woven through as well as modern day racism themes with our Black main character in a primarily white environment. Overall, I think the fantasy readers will really appreciate this one.
