M Train by Patti Smith
4.0

There's something I find painfully romantic about Smith's writing. Although this book did not evoke the same emotional response as Just Kids or Devotion, I appreciate her attention to minute detail and exceeding ability to articulate an appreciation for the mundane despite living a life so rich with abundance. This book was delightful to me for its irregular storytelling pattern. As a busy English student, having a book for pleasure that I can read in small doses and still find rich engagement with each story, even if I take weeks between picking it up again, is exceptionally rare. Nonetheless, every time I picked up this book, I was enraptured with Smith's most minor observations, her observations on subtlety and approach to examining the world through the slow lens of a coffee shop conversation or aimless walk in a new city. I will certainly revisit this book in a few years when I have gathered more written material from my own meanderings. The extensive list of new writers to read, films to watch, and philosophers to theorize she recommends is much appreciated too!
