Many who have loved and continue to love the music of Dolly Parton may have little to no sense of the woman herself. Perpetual butt of a joke or reduced to a caricature of herself, Parton has nonetheless spent her entire career being quietly radical. In She Come by it Natural, Sarah Smarsh reveals some of the bumps in the road that nudged Parton into being a force both onstage and off. From a childhood devoid of material objects, but full of music, Parton sprung into the music scene knowing from the jump that self-determination was the only thing worth fighting for. A shrewd negotiator and wise from a young age, she knew enough to walk away from a bad deal and how to put herself in line for a good one. Once the money started flowing, Parton dedicated began shoveling it back into the community from whence she and her music both sprang.
