You Are Not Alone by Greer Hendricks, Sarah Pekkanen
2.0

Really annoyed this book has a higher rating than the book I finished before it (Afterland by Lauren Beuke which is a different genre but STILL)

This book is not good. Here are some of my notes from it. Spoilers ahead but I try to be light on them:

“She’s also savvy enough that she was able to install a security camera on a streetlight just outside Amanda’s building and remotely access the live video”
- you want me to believe someone installed a CAMERA on a freaking 10 foot tall streetlight in Brooklyn? No.

About a guy who sells crack: “she brought Adam, who was high, to her nephews first birthday party, where he’d dug a big serving spoon into the cake and scooped out the first bite for himself”
- because crack really makes you want to eat??

The GPS devices installed in necklaces and purses... ridiculous

“I wasn’t the type of girl who dreamed about pink ruffles or tulle—I preferred soccer and math problems”
- this really rubbed me the wrong way. Girls can like pink AND math. It would be one thing if the character was developed enough that we saw she was strict with gender roles and lacked nuance when it came to them but she wasn’t so this just comes off as sexist.

And then the “twist” where we learn that some of the characters were related all along. It’s so unearned and feels like the authors were purposely fucking with us, but not in a good unreliable narrator sort of way.

I definitely do not recommend this book!
