Well-crafted, humorous, dark but mostly not too disturbing (except for the headless demon horse running around killing people, wtf ), great characters, great plot tensions. I needed a book with this specific balance of being interesting and engaging but not making me think too hard. I don't feel like it's particularly revolutionary or literary, but it is thoroughly enjoyable.
Two specific things I enjoyed: 1) the heroes' distinct lack of specialness. They are just everyday people who are driven to take risks out of love for others. And 2) the blend of fantasy, murder mystery (ish, it's not a mystery to the reader), and Regency romance (again, only kind of, in a sideways kind of way). I guess it is original in the sense that while it feels very solidly "fantasy," trying to sort it into a more specific sub-genre gets messy.

Graphic: Animal death, Suicide, Murder, Injury/Injury detail
Moderate: Child abuse, Emotional abuse
Minor: Ableism, Death of parent
This book definitely needs content warnings but it's hard to label them, lol. Animal death but not really? Does full-body possession/control fall under child abuse? Anyway, proceed with caution! But the ending is mostly happy.
