Her Soul to Take
by Harley Laroux
This book can be read as a standalone and contains scenes that some readers may find uncomfortable. A helpful Trigger warning list is given at the start of the book and should be read carefully before continuing as these subjects could be considered heavy by many.

WELL! I am certainly no stranger to spicy books - Her Soul to Take was SPICYYYYYYYYYY, all caps needed. Of course, there are no complaints from me in the smut department, but the constant use of the word 'Baby Girl' I could have done without (Personal ick). I mean, really? Leon is a pretty old demon, couldn't he come up with a more unique term of endearment? I had to try pretending he didn't say it every time, but once it slipped from his mouth, it just kept coming back. :(
Still, this book is not only full of such exciting, smutty scenes (if you're into that...) but the story overall was gripping from the get-go. There are so many different and interesting characters that pop up and I'm sure we'll get to see more of them in the next books.
The main characters in THIS book are Leon and Rae.
Leon is a captive when we first meet him, but his sarcastic and playful attitude comes through immediately and I found it very easy to like his character.
This is a pretty fast-paced story and I expected things to move quickly, but I do still think that the ending felt a little rushed. After the small scene with the God, suddenly all the antagonists (so far) were dealt with and we could all go home. I was left craving a little more closure for Leon and Rae. I am aware that the next book follows another couple within this book, so perhaps some gaps can be filled in, but I'd be interested to see what happens with Leon and Rae - Do they ever make it to Hell which is where Leon wanted to go in the first place? Sounds intriguing with how Leon described it so I hope that is explored somewhere.
Either way, I was completely engaged with this book, wasn't bored once, and thought about it whenever I wasn't reading it - I am super excited to dive into the next adventure with Zane and Juniper. We only saw a bit of them in this book but you can already tell they are going to kick up a storm together.
If sexually forward characters, demons, an old God, a cult, a witch, monsters, and a cute little cat called Cheesecake interest you, look no further, this is the book for you.

The main characters in THIS book are Leon and Rae.
When we meet Rae, she is returning to her childhood home after her parents retire to Spain. She seems to love all things spooky, from hunting ghosts to exploring urban buildings. She is strong-willed, resolute, and likes running headfirst into dangerous situations, even when she is told that it will threaten her life.
“Maybe this would be the day I died. Maybe this really was my fate. But in the end, the choice had still been mine. I’d found the deepest depths of this darkness and looked upon true horror. I’d fought every step of the way. If I was going to die, then I would die still fighting.”I will admit, the recurring 'I need to go back and put myself into danger which makes everything much worse' did start grating on me slightly... but overall, I didn't have much of a problem with her character.
Leon is a captive when we first meet him, but his sarcastic and playful attitude comes through immediately and I found it very easy to like his character.
“Do something?” He shot me a narrow-eyed glare, and said mockingly, “Oh Leon, do something! Save me, please, oh please! What happened to Be gone, demon? What happened to trying to bash my head in with a crucifix?”As the book progresses, he is also shown to be fiercely protective and unexpectedly full of passionate emotion - plus he liked the cat so that is always extra points.
“I’ll rip Heaven and Hell and this goddamn Earth apart before I let them steal you from me.”I won't go too deeply into the other characters as they will come up more in their own books, I'm sure, but I will say that the imagery formed with the descriptions of the monsters were chilling. I can't imagine seeing those Gollums on the road and still walking around in the dark.. Eugh. I'd LOVE to see full and official artwork for the monsters in this book.
