Lucky Me: A Memoir of Changing the Odds by Rich Paul

This is a love/hate book for me. While I do think that Rich has a good story, provides a captivating voice when listening to him, and gives inspiration for those with similar back ground and upbringings; I just found his memoir to be lacking for me in certain spots. My issues were that I felt like Roch was reading to me instead of telling me his story, and the reason that was frustrating is that you can tell that he has a captivating voice and could probably really draw you in but that never seemed to be given legs and an opportunity to happen. While unique, Rich kept focusing on the same topic from his childhood which began to make the story less interesting at times. For example, I could understand what he was trying to convey when discussing his obsession with materialistic items and how that drove him and led him to both successes and failures, but as we got to each age it felt like that was harkened back on over and over and I didn't really feel there was a pay off to it by the end of the memoir. I do think it's worth a listen, especially if you are interested in stories of self-made entrepreneurs, especially for a young person of color.. Just manage your expectations and I think you'll be fine.
