I'm not sure if I liked this book or not. It was really funny but I also wanted this book to be over? The writing style/tone of this book reminds me of Assistant to the Villain.

This book had a really strong start & immediately drew me in. I liked Ysabel on introduction and I liked the premise of the book. A Holy Maiden who has the power to heal but it costs her a day of her life. Also, I really loved the subversion of the “holy maiden dominating dark lord” dynamic. While the execution of the sex scenes didn’t fully work for me (felt like they were missing something),  it totally worked conceptually. The pacing of this book was a bit off, it started to drag around 65% and pretty much stayed like that until maybe 90% for me.

I really enjoyed all the representation here. It's a diverse cast that all deal with real issue pertaining to their identities.

I loved (and hated) every single character. Alzira is my favorite. Every time she's on the page I was smiling or laughing. Her devotion to Ysabel is unparalleled. Every one needs a friend like her.

It is still a fun read with honest depictions of what it means to be part of marginalized groups. I think if the pacing was a little better this would be 3-3.5 stars for me.

SMALL SPOILER HERE ------

One thing I really did not like is when Ysabel is trying to push Kaine away by saying hurtful things she internally immediately jumps to "just a girl playing pretend". I feel like that is so uncalled for and while I can understand she is trying to hurt his feelings; I think that was unnecessary. While ultimately she didn't say it out loud, it is then framed as if she's such a good person because she can't bring herself to say that.
