A Dawn with the Wolf Knight by Elise Kova

5.0

Spoilers without context:

Elise Kova's steamiest novel yet, I'm sad to see the Married to Magic series potentially be at an end. If this truly is the last novel that Kova writes in this world, then it's a satisfying conclusion at least; A Dawn with the Wolf Knight is full of nods to the other books in the series, though, like with its predecessors, you aren't required to read Kova's previous forays into this universe (
Spoilerreaders that haven't read A Duet with a Siren Duke won't understand who Victoria and Kevhan are, but they play a very minor role and their tale isn't crucial to enjoying Faelyn's journey
).

Each entry in Married to Magic has been wildly different from those that came before and after it; despite sharing the world of Midscape, the elves, fae, vampir, sirens, and now lykin possess distinct cultures, allowing Kova to tell unique stories woven from treasured fairytales and myths. Each heroine in the series has also been delightfully singular, Faelyn particularly so, as she is the first protagonist to wield magic naturally as a human. Until this point, humans have been painted as being magicless, unable to harness ethereal powers on their own without the assistance of magical creatures. Faelyn's ability to call upon spirits and commune with the magic around her is handled with care, developed in a believable manner that doesn't put her at odds with the lore that has thus far been developed.

I truly feel like Married to Magic was just getting started--though I suppose that's what happens when each novel is standalone and introduces new concepts, creatures, and characters. I hope that Kova returns to Midscape at some point; there is so much potential left to explore!
