Cloaked
by Alex Flinn
I actually wanted to give this book 2.5 stars (they should really make that possible here...) but because that's not an option, I decided to bump it up a bit. :)
I initially read Beastly by Alex Flinn and loved it so much (it's one of the very few books that I've given 5 stars to) that I knew I HAD to read A Kiss in Time and Cloaked, her other two modern-day fairy tales. Beastly revolved around the story of Beauty and the Beast, just with teenagers in our day and age. Cloaked, on the other hand, consists of a jumble of several different fairy tales. These include:
-The Elves and the Shoemaker
-The Frog Prince
-The Six Swans
-The Golden Bird
-The Valiant Tailor
-The Salad
-The Fisherman and His Wife
I was unfamiliar with several of these before I read the book (which is saying something since I adore fairy tales)and so am thankful to Flinn for introducing me to them. I also thought the way she incorporated all of these into one story was very impressive. Her writing style is easy yet fun, and there were quite a few moments in the book where I laughed out loud. :D The main character was a boy, which of course automatically makes me biased since I love stories with a male lead. :P
With that being said, there was a LOT more action in this than I was expecting. I was expecting it to be more romance-based, when it actually turned out to be one big adventure. I like adventures, but I think she could've included more romance without losing out on any of the story. The ending was extremely predictable, but I liked it.
So why the 3 stars? Because there's a certain plot twist that occurs about 2/3 through the book that I REALLY did not like. I completely understand why Flinn did it, and I also realize it was the "right" thing to do. It made the book better- provided a more important lesson for YA readers and made the protagonist a deeper character- BUT I really really didn't like it. There's a certain set of things I expect from a fairy tale, even if it is a modern-day retelling, and this just didn't fit in with what I wanted to happen. I think that's when I lost a lot of my interest, which is one of the reasons why it took me so long to finish it.
That and 3 quizzes, 2 lab reports, and 1 exam, of course. :P
Regardless, I look forward to reading A Kiss in Time (modern day sleeping beauty) and Flinn is still awesome to me because of Beastly. :D
