Set in a poor, postwar village in Poland, follows the story of a strange murder, the amateur investigation of which uncovers a wider scope of corruption and history. Explores themes of love and what it represents, a plurality of what it means to be “good” in society, and the relationship of a village of poles to the now-exiled/exterminated Jewish population. This final theme can be an analogy of how we respond to “others” in general, of the “connective tissue that runs, sometimes w minor inflammations, between us.” (P380)
Good thesis on p360
Overall a good book, dreamy and reflective, but slow moving. Spaced out over our trip to London, Madison WI, and our first few weeks with Ozzy, so read in small spurts. Would have been better to read it all at once but the pace makes that somewhat hard.
