The Dark Days Deceit
by Alison Goodman
This was a strong conclusion to what has been a great historical/supernatural series.
The story is very Downton Abbey meets the supernatural. It's a very well researched look at Regency England and the expectations and restraints placed on men and women living during this time. The author does a great job creating ways for Lady Helen to partake in Reclaimer activities despite the patriarchal society.
Even though I saw the plot twist coming from the very beginning, it was still very satisfying watching it unfold. The only minor criticism is that once the Grand Deceiver is finally revealed, after such a long build up it doesn't take long for the fight scene to be over.
The romance sub-plot between Helen and Carlston is wrapped up fairly well. I found Carlston to be quite aloof throughout the series, so found it difficult to invest much in their relationship. In saying that, I strongly suspect the aloofness came from the whole propriety thing that was part of Regency life.
Overall I really enjoyed this series and hope that we may see more adventures with Lady Helen in the future!
