Hot Wax by M.L. Rio
2.75

This fell a little flat for me. As far as highly anticipated sophomore novels go, M.L. Rio was tip top of my list but I don't think I was the right audience for this book. I was drawn to the 1989 storyline and the mystery of the tour but the adult POV/storyline felt trite and contrived. I do not enjoy a book that villainizes a character "for the plot" and I could not see this any other way. We are following a messy protagonist who has made some bad choices, and it seemed very convenient by the end. The pacing of this book also did not work for me. The POV shifts and timeline shifts worked further on in the book, but I found myself flipping back at the beginning, feeling like important plot points/narratives had been omitted. I also felt like certain characters were just left out after a certain point, as if their conclusion in the story was edited out.
