The Grapes of Wrath captured the life of a family, The Joads and how the great depression led to abrupt change in their life. A family that owns land, farm and house but forced out by large corporations when the Dust Bowl consumed their land and rendered it barren. They set out on a journey to the west, a journey of hope that grow bleaker which each encounter and as they draw closer to their destination, yet they persist in striving and even in sorrow there is happiness.
"This is a story of family bond, strength, compassion, survival, loss and dignity". It is also a story of greed and hate, how the big guy exploit the weak, turning them into a beast filled with wrath. Nobody likes a beast, this breeds hatred that spreads among all countrymen.
Tom is a character that resonates with me, he is a selfless and will do anything right by human logic to keep his family safe. Ma is also a well-written character, fierce and deeply empathetic. One of the scenes that struck me is when Al blew the engine gasket, and Ma pick up a wrench and confronted everyone. I also love how Steinbeck writes the children with whimsical charm. Most of the moments I laughed out loud always involved Ruthie and Winfield.
The ending caught me off guard as i was hoping for one where the depression ended and everything returned to normal, but i love how Steinbeck thread this. It shows this is a system issue and not until the government steps in to enact and reform laws then will there be light ahead in the tunnel.
