Swimming Lessons
by Claire Fuller
I like the premise of a woman writing letters to her husband about their marriage and hiding the letters in books, but the execution is terrible. First, if you want to have the bulk of your book be letters, just accept that your readers will have to connect some dots on their own. We're willing to do it! Otherwise it just rings very false; nobody is writing such detailed letters, relaying entire conversations verbatim like this. I've seen this a lot lately and it's a bad trend. Anyway, the "truth" about their marriage is that these are two of the most unappealing characters I can think of. He is all around awful and she is a total doormat. I'm scratching my head over why anybody liked this.
