Hideous Beauty by William Hussey

3.0

Hideous Beauty follows sixth form student, Dylan and how he needs to come to terms with the death of his boyfriend, Ellis, after the two of them are involved in a car accident. It’s after this tragic event that Dylan starts to realise that perhaps he didn’t know as much about the boy he loved as much as he thought he did. Strange things start popping up, along with multiple questions that Dylan is desperate to find out the answers to.

POSITIVES:
* very importat issues raised within the book including sexuality, self discovery, drug addiction and sexual abuse
* a very quick and pretty easy read
* gorgeous cover (it's what drew me to the book in the first place if I'm being honest!)
-
NEGATIVES:
* the storyline felt a lot weak
* the constant flicking between past and present became a little distracting
* the characters didn't have that much depth to them - it was hard for them to stand out apart from each other

Overall, I just think this book could have been improved a tad more and the story could have been developed a little further to give it that little bit more sustenance to it. But it was a good start to my inevitable YA thriller/mystery binge session, and if anything, it’s made me super excited delve into more YA thriller/mysteries!
