This is "[b:The Stand|149267|The Stand|Stephen King|https://i.gr-assets.com/images/S/compressed.photo.goodreads.com/books/1213131305l/149267._SX50_.jpg|1742269]" but much better :)

Yes, there is the end of the world as we know it - but this focuses very strongly on the descent... what happens to all these poor sods as the world circles the drain...

Basically - some people start to "sleepwalk" - they just get up and wander off - but they all join together! You have this little flock of sleepwalkers, and some of their loved ones follow along to take care of them...

But as this happens, people start to get sick and die... and the crazies come out of the woodwork...

So like the stand, and [b:Lucifer's Hammer|218467|Lucifer's Hammer|Larry Niven|https://i.gr-assets.com/images/S/compressed.photo.goodreads.com/books/1388268115l/218467._SY75_.jpg|1842237], and other apocalyptic stories, this is more about the people who try to survive and protect those they love while the world goes to hell in a handbasket.

Yeah its a big book... but i wouldn't call it long - there were bits where the author shot ahead or skipped parts that I would have loved to read in detail (which I guess is a good sign?)

I really liked this book, and if you like apocalyptic fiction of a more sci-fi bent, then give this a read!
