When Pinmei's grandma is kidnapped by the emperor she must find the Luminous Stone That Lights the Night to hopefully bargain for her back. Joined by her friend Yishan they venture into the world of legend.

Craft-wise, this story does a great job of weaving stories into the main story. Storytelling is an intrinsic part of the story and is used to create links and connections between characters and locations that might not have been originally evident or would have had to be outright told to make clear. It makes the world so much vaster and more connected while also allowing the reader to figure out what is happening on their own. I think this method is simple yet effective at disseminating information while also recognizing how to make readers invested in that dissemination. Grace Lin never makes it clear at first why a story is important but makes sure that there are threads so that when it is wrapped up, you understand why a character told it right then and there.

I loved this story. I enjoyed that Pinmei was following in her grandma's footsteps and also the demonstration that kindness usurps the desire for power. I think this is a great close to this series of books and I love them a lot.
