The Vanishing Half by Brit Bennett

4.0

I had high expectations for this book because I had read many, many good things about it and because I loved The Mothers so much when I read it and found it so unexpected. The Vanishing Half is the story of Black identical twin sisters who choose very different paths in their lives. One of whom leaves her sister and their life together and moves to California and passes as white. The sisters are estranged and each struggles with the life she chose. The story alternates between them and for me, I had a hard time connecting with them because of their estrangement.

Where the story really picked up for me was with their daughters. I became fully engrossed in both Jade and Kennedy's stories, especially as they begin to intersect. While this wasn't as strong a read for me as The Mothers was, I still recommend it. It is an important study of race, class and identity. Brit Bennett is an author that everyone should read.
