4.5 - We've abused the planet and are on the precipice of no return. This apocalyptic story - like another recent favorite "Leave the World Behind" - has the children in charge as an epic storm rages and floods ensue. I'm sure some of the biblical imagery was lost on this atheist but saving animals during a flood and a woman giving birth on a hay stack when three "angels" arrive were obvious symbols in Millet's brilliant cautionary tale. The ending was so good that I read it a second time the next day.
