The Immortal Game: A History of Chess, or How 32 Carved Pieces on a Board Illuminated Our Understanding of War, Art, Science and the Human Brain by David Shenk

informative lighthearted medium-paced

4.0

I got this book when I was first getting into chess.  Shenk's exploration of the game's origins, major players, and cultural influence is solidly written, informative, and fairly light.  You don't have to know a lick about the finer nuances of chess to get something from this book.
