Hijab Butch Blues by Lamya H

5.0

I feel like I'm just getting so lucky with the memoirs I'm choosing this year.
Lamya H is a queer Muslim, two time immigrant, and deeply religious. While many of the experiences are, of course, inexplicably tied to the intersection of these identities, the way this memoir is written I think many can relate to a lot of these feelings and experiences (bad dates, fear of abandonment, inability to open up, a complicated relationship with your mother), even if they aren't a part of any of those communities- and everything else can be elucidating.
I've never been religious and l'm thankful I was raised without religion and still had the freedom to try it out when I was old enough to decide (and come to my own conclusions) but this book reminded me that despite all the harm and negativity and trauma that religion can cause, that it can also be beautiful.
I loved the perspective offered in this book, and I highly recommend it.
