My Year of Rest and Relaxation by Ottessa Moshfegh

dark reflective fast-paced
  • Plot- or character-driven? A mix
  • Strong character development? It's complicated
  • Flaws of characters a main focus? Yes

In some strange way I connect with the main character. If I could, I would also sleep for a year to ignore all my responsibilities and fix my mental health. I totally get why people don’t like this book. The main character is entitled, pretentious, careless and mean, but there is just something that made me feel for her. I enjoyed sort of stream of consciousness writing as it read well even if it sometimes felt it went nowhere. Anyway I’d love to make rereading this book a yearly thing, since throughout 2023 I found myself thinking about this book so much, I had to reread it. So let’s see if that continues into a yearly thing and see you in a year?
