The 5th Wave by Rick Yancey
3.0

Aliens have an insidious plan to rid Earth of humans so they can have it for themselves. This plan has been under wraps since the beginning of mankind. The aliens are highly sentient, evolved beings with no corporal bodies of their own. Their plan to take over the planet happens in horrific stages. With most of the population decimated after four brutal phases, the 5th wave is the most chilling, turning survivor against survivor. The story alternates between different voices. There is plenty of action and quick plotting. The characters are interesting and well drawn. To give yourself over to the story, however, you have to overlook a lot of rather big plot holes. Why do the aliens want Earth? Why is cohabitation impossible? Why, since they have the technology, will, and power do they not just kill everyone themselves in one fell swoop? Why physically destroy the planet they claim to want/need? Why have they waited 6,000 years to make a move? And why make the move now? What was the trigger? They have no problem disposing of anyone over the age of 16 themselves, so why the need to train an army of child warriors? Why do they need the children? How will they take on a corporal form after they've gotten rid of all the humans? If they can just be inserted into a human host, why not just go that route for a bloodless and swift victory? Lots of questions with no satisfying answers. Recommended for fans of the I am Number Four series, Partials, or the Ashfall trilogy. Survival, bad guys, action, light romance. No sex, rape, or pillage, mild language. First in the series.
